Origins:
Patchouli has been a much prized herb in the East since ancient times. Along with oils such as Sandalwood, Rose, Basil and Jasmine, Patchouli was a favourite for scenting linen and cloths. It became very popular by hippies during the 1960's as a symbol of love and peace.
It is cultivated in Indonesia, Malaysia, China, India and South America. The oil is extracted from the dried leaves and shoots of this small bushy shrub. The essential oil has an earthy, woody sweet smell. It also improves with age and the perfume industry use it as a fixative.
Therapeutic Effects:
Patchouli is an astringent and useful for skin and scalp conditions, eczema, acne, dandruff and scars. Can help alleviate fluid retention and has an uplifting effect for anxiety and depression.
