Origins:
Fennel grows wild in most of Europe. The ancient Romans and Greeks advocated the strongly flavoured seeds to ward off evil spirits, give them strength, kill fleas and also sweeten the breath. The Romans also believed it could help promote good vision as well as a cure for obesity.
These perennial plants are cultivated in many parts of Europe, commonly in France, Italy and Germany. It is commonly used as a herb for flavouring fish dishes. The seeds, which smell of aniseed, are used in liquorice. The essential oil is extracted from the crushed seeds and has an anise like peppery smell.
Therapeutic Effects:
Noted as a mild diuretic and a mild laxative. Has been found to be effective for colic, digestive problems and constipation. Helpful to use for menopausal problems, nausea and obesity. Useful for the relief of kidney stones. It is a common ingredient in baby gripe water. Believed to be helpful for increasing milk yield during breast feeding.
