Origins:
Sandalwood has long been a favourite ingredient for cosmetics and perfumes. The ancient Indians, Egyptians and Chinese used it for embalming and burning in incense. Used in Ayurveda, the Indian system of healing, for a variety of conditions including poisonous stings and external bleeding, as well as a blood purifier. It has long been prized by furniture makers and, in India, has been used to build many temples.
The evergreen tree grows to a height of approximately 30ft (8 metres). The oil is extracted from the roughly chipped and powdered wood through steam distillation. The essential oil has a deep fruity-sweet woody smell.
Therapeutic Effects:
Sandalwoods sedative properties are good for treating depression, tension, stress and insomnia. Useful for skin complaints, cracked and chapped skin. It is also and expectorant and antispasmodic. Useful for coughs, nausea and bronchitis. Also regarded by some as an aphrodisiac.
