Origins: Juniper berries were used by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians to ward off infections. The aromatic leaves and berries were popular as incense to burn in religious ceremonies, to purify the air and ward off the plague. In England Juniper was burnt to scare away demons and witches. An evergreen bush with narrow needle leaves, small yellow flowers and purplish-blue berries, this plant is native to Northern Europe and is grown commercially in Spain, France, Scandinavia and also Canada. Oil is extracted from the fresh berries and needles which produces a pale yellow essence with a strong aroma of pine with a hot peppery edge.

Therapeutic Effects: Diuretic and antiseptic, it is especially effective for the urinary tract and an excellent treatment for cystitis and water retention, slow circulation and cellulite. Used for acne, dermatitis, eczema and skin ulcers. It also has a calming effect on stress and good for aches and pains.
