Origins: The name Chamomile is derived from the Greek 'Kamai Melon' which means 'ground apple' because the plant grows close to the ground and has an apple like fragrance. Oil is extracted from the freshly dried daisy-like flowers which are pale blue in colour. The Egyptians thought the flower was sacred and dedicated it to the Sun God. Chamomile is one of the oldest British medicinal and beauty herbs. According to Nicholas Culpepper, Chamomile was known to be effective for a wide range of complaints. It is used to make blonde hair blonder and was also widely used as an antiseptic during World War 2. During ancient times it was used in ritual ceremonies and medicinally to stop fits and fevers. It is also often used as a tea to treat insomniacs. Roman (or wild) Chamomile is found in Britain, other parts of Europe and also North Africa whilst German Chamomile grows in Germany, Hungary and also in Russia. The oil is rich in Azulene, a natural anti-inflammatory and healing agent.

Therapeutic Effects: It is an excellent anti-inflammatory and also good for aches and pains in both muscles and organs eg. earache. It has relaxing, sedative properties and used for insomnia, stress, menstrual and menopausal problems. Also used for allergies, anaemia, burns, dermatitis, fever, rheumatism, toothache and ulcers. Can also be used for highlighting blonde hair.
